  • Traditional Master’s: 33 credit hours, Summer/Fall Start = 2-year completion; Spring Start = 2.5-year completion

  • Accelerated Master’s: 33 credit hours, Spring/Summer Start = 1 year, plus 1 semester completion; Fall Start = 1 year, plus 2 semester completion

Concordia University Chicago’s Principal Preparation Program prepares education professionals for administrative responsibility within schools. It is intended to help students:

  • Promote the success of all students through developing and implementing a shared vision of learning and programs, which support this learning.
  • Develop basic skills in management of the organization, operations and resources for a safe, efficient and effective learning environment.
  • Collaborate with staff, boards, students, families and community members in response to diverse educational and community interests and needs, and mobilize community resources.

Capstone Experience

This is a year-long (two consecutive semesters – Fall and Spring) capstone clinical experience offering a variety of appropriate site-based hands-on experiences, including public policy in a diverse setting supervised by University and site personnel. These should be among the final courses in the program (EDL-6993 Illinois Principal Preparation Program: Internship I and EDL-6994 Illinois Principal Preparation Program: Internship II). Prerequisite: The student must be in the Principal Preparation Program. Students must consult with their Graduate Program Specialist (GPS) before registering for these courses.

Additional Program Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree – All applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
    • Master’s Degree required for Endorsement Only or Ed.S. tracks.
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) – Upon entry of the program, applicants must have and maintain a valid Professional Educator License, or an applicant may be admitted on a provisional basis if holding a valid and recent teaching license from another state as long as by the end of the second course in the program, the applicant holds a valid and current Illinois PEL to be completely admitted and move forward with the remainder of the program.
  • Teaching Experience – Applicants must have two to three years of teaching experience to start the program; 4 years to obtain licensure.
  • Completed Application – Successful completion of the application requirements for the CUC Principal Preparation Program (previously called the Type 75). Your Graduate Information Office representative will walk you through the required steps.
CUC Division of Educational Leadership

The Concordia University Chicago Division of Educational Leadership is at the frontline in providing education professionals with superior, pertinent and current Master’s in Education and Doctoral education programs which improve the leadership of public and private school educators and administrators. Our programs are approved by Illinois State Board of Education.

Our department advocates for all our graduate degree applicants and all students in public and private schools. We are moral professionals who provide excellent, relevant and current education for our graduate candidates in leadership. We prepare our students to be K-12 teachers and administrator leaders.

Application for the Illinois Principal Endorsement, previously called the Type 75 certification, is made through the Office of the Registrar following graduation.

Graduation Requirements
  • Have on file an application for this master’s degree program.
  • Have on file one official transcript from EACH college/university attended of all previous coursework taken.
  • Complete, for the degree being sought:
    • the credit hours and levels as designated,
    • within the specified time limit,
    • with grades of C- or higher (grades of C or higher required for MAT programs),
    • with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. 
    • Students completing multiple advanced programs or degrees at CUC must have a 3.0 GPA in each academic program in addition to a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.  
  • Have on file approved “Graduate Transfer Credit Approval” form(s), “Course Substitution” form(s), or evaluation(s), if applicable.
  • Have on file the Intent to Graduate/Complete form with the Office of the Registrar by the published deadline.
  • Have on file, if applicable, necessary copies of a project, portfolio, thesis or dissertation.
  • Approval of the faculty.
  • All administrative obligations to CUC must be cleared in order to prompt the release of CUC transcripts and diploma(s).

At the time of program completion, among other licensure requirements, candidates must have at least four years of full-time, successful teaching experience and/or student support personnel experience to apply for licensure.
