In the past several years, Concordia University Irvine has experienced a rapid transition from face-to-face instruction to online learning programs. This change is a result of most professional educators preferring the ease and convenience of online learning programs. Busy teacher schedules, the time lost in commuting to class locations, and the need for balancing professional and personal lives have fueled this change of preferred learning experience. In an online learning environment, teachers are able to fulfill their professional teaching responsibilities and then choose the times that work best for them to engage with their colleagues.
To assure that Concordia Irvine’s Master of Arts in Education (MAED) professors are able to provide the best possible online learning experience for their students, CUI has implemented a required online teaching certificate program for all instructors. This requirement guarantees that each class is taught consistently with the university’s standards for online instruction.
Concordia Irvine has been using the Blackboard Learn LMS (Learning Management System) for many years and has been very successful in taking full advantage of the benefits this LMS offers in the online learning environment. One of the highest priorities of the university in the transition from face-to-face instruction to online instruction was maintaining the personal connection and support between students and instructors. Concordia Irvine is committed to developing online relationships between students and professors. Blackboard Learn provides the online environment where this type of interaction can be the most effective.
Blackboard Learn Features that Support Instruction
Blackboard Learn provides many features to support the best possible instruction as detailed below.
Professors are committed to posting a weekly video with each week’s lesson. This enables students to “see” and get familiar with their online instructor while still providing the personal connection Concordia Irvine values. This ongoing personal connection with professors and students results in building a supportive, collaborative experience for students.
Professors post weekly announcements for their students to read. Students can find these under the announcement tab, or they can be made to pop up when a student accesses Blackboard. Course content and organization are presented in the Blackboard shell, so students have instant access to the information and tools they need to be successful in each class. Student support tutorials are included in each course shell in the event students need technical support while taking a class.
The chat function allows those students and their instructor who are online to chat in real time with other students in their class section. The chat function is available at any time on any device which allows students to collaborate and support each other just as they would in a face-to-face environment.
The discussion board feature allows students and professors to create a discussion thread and reply to ones already created. The discussion board feature is where the content of the course becomes real. Students share thoughts, insights, experiences, and work together to solve real life problems and learn to work as a team to be successful in their experience.
Instructors post articles, assignments, videos, and more each week to deliver the course content and various learning strategies directly to students.
The assignments feature allows assignments to be posted and students to submit assignments online. Teachers and professors can post grades on Blackboard for students to view. The assessments feature allows teachers to post quizzes and exams and allows students to access them, as well.
Concordia University Irvine is committed to providing the most current, up-to-date experience possible for teachers who are devoting their lives to providing the best possible experiences for their students every day.
