Students are not required to take additional certification tests once the coursework is completed, however, students still must apply through the Pennsylvania Department of Education for the new Certification area.


  • Educators who are already certified in PA Special Education Grades 7-12 who wish to add-on certification in Grades PreK-8.
  • Educators who are already certified in PA Special Education Grades PreK-8 who wish to add-on certification in Grades 7-12.

What You Learn

Provides professional educators with a thorough understanding of educational theories while emphasizing collaborative, hands-on, learning using appropriate technologies. Courses are based on the latest research in the field and prepare professional educators to develop curricula for content areas that incorporate diverse learner populations and settings across the lifespan.

How You Learn

Online Format: This is an online cohort program. No face-to-face class meetings are required, but students will be engaged in an active and engaging online classroom environment that includes assignments, materials, discussion threads, assessments and/or group activities done electronically. You will finish one 3-credit course every 8 weeks. Following this schedule, you will complete the program in 4 months.

Career Outcomes

This certificate will expand the candidate’s ability to serve as special education teachers in any K-12 school in the Commonwealth of PA. Many other state departments of education will also accept the PA certification.
