There are many advantages of having a master’s degree in education with a special education certification. For instance, one can learn new skills, concepts, and strategies that can help with planning instruction. Most importantly, this degree with certification allows educators to become more knowledgeable and aware of the different types of learners, which can help with providing a better education to their students.
What is a Master’s in Education with Special Education Certification?
A master’s in education with a special ed. certification allows educators to gain deeper insights and learn effective skills for providing the best education to meet the needs of all students.
With that being said, one course might be based on a concept for general education, while the next course might focus on a topic in special education. Oftentimes, I found myself integrating some of the material that I learned from one class into another. In addition, I was able to utilize some of the skills into my own instruction.
For example, one of my special ed. classes highlighted the importance of differentiating instruction and understanding the various types of learners. Although I currently teach in a general ed. classroom, I was able to utilize some of the methods and strategies I learned from my special ed. classes. I started incorporating various forms of activities while also becoming more aware of my auditory and visual learners. In my opinion, I believe that when people hear the term “special ed.,” they automatically think of severe disabilities. We as educators need to become more open-minded and aware that special education is a realm that should be explored. This type of program allows educators to become more enlightened, and it can also serve as a reminder of the importance for meeting the needs of all students.
What You’ll Learn in an Education with Special Education Certification Program
In the two years that I was enrolled in this program, I learned quite a lot of skills, concepts, and strategies. For example, some of the topics that were discussed in this program consisted of: writing and understanding IEPs, distinguishing between different disabilities, comprehending standardized test scores, learning about technology resources, differentiating instruction, researching the history of special education, and more. All of these classes were highly beneficial and provided much insight throughout a variety of areas. I would also like to point out that many of the courses contained group discussions. It always was interesting and oftentimes beneficial to hear from peers about some of the effective strategies they use in their classrooms and their perspectives on certain concepts.
Advantages of an Education with Special Education Certification Master’s Degree
I believe that there are many advantages to having both a master’s in education along with a certification in special education. Educators can gain deeper insights and have a stronger understanding of different concepts, which can ultimately help them in providing a better education to their students. Additionally, these skills can be used in both the general and special ed. setting. By having more knowledge in both areas, this allows educators to consider a variety of career paths and opportunities. For example, educators with a master’s in education and a special ed. certification can apply for general ed. positions as well as special ed. positions. In addition, a master’s in education can provide an increase in salary. Overall, a lot of positive outcomes can come from a master’s in education with a special ed. certification.
