What is a Supervisor Certification?
A supervisor certification is a post-master’s endorsement that allows an individual to apply for their supervisor certification through the state of New Jersey. This endorsement allows one to serve as a Supervisor of Instruction in grades K-12. Responsibilities in this role include, but are not limited to, overseeing the implementation of district curricula, guiding staff members to employ best practices in instruction, facilitating opportunities for professional development, and conducting evaluations.
Teachers seeking a supervisor certification must fulfill the following requirements: obtain a master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, provide evidence of a standard instructional certificate, and submit a record of at least three years of successful, full-time teaching experience. Graduate work must include 12 graduate credits in concepts related to instructional staff supervision and curriculum design and development. The primary goal of Georgian Court University’s program is to ensure that the coursework related to staff supervision and curriculum development are completed.
What You’ll Learn in a Supervisor Certification Program
Completing the supervisor certification program primarily focused on developing skills related to staff supervision and curriculum design and development. In addition, the ability to network with other professionals in the field of education allowed me to build upon my interpersonal skills.
Coursework related to curriculum design and development through Georgian Court addresses the many philosophies, theories, social issues, trends in content knowledge, and best practices in instruction. Through this program, students are introduced to the concept of backwards design, or starting with the end assessment in mind. By starting with what we expect students to be able to do, we can then determine how, and with what resources, we want them to get there. You find that, even with a sound curriculum in place, leaders must constantly monitor, evaluate, and adjust curricular documents based on relevant data and feedback from stakeholders. If I learned one thing throughout my coursework, it is that curriculum is a living document; one must not become complacent in their teaching practices, and it is up to the instructional leader to ensure that the school community is responsive to trends related to data, feedback from stakeholders, and current research.
