How Carson-Newman University Made the Admission Process Easy

Starting anything new, especially going back to school while you are working full-time, can be daunting. I had been thinking about going back to school for an Ed.S. for quite a while but never acted on it. One day at work, I got a flyer in my mailbox about an informational meeting for the Carson-Newman University Ed.S. and Ed.D. programs in education. Since the meeting was held after school hours but not too late and not too far from my home, I decided to go to the meeting to hear more about the program. Once I was there, I figured that I should just go ahead and fill out the paperwork to see if this was something that I wanted to do. If it got to be too much, I thought to myself, I could always stop within the admission process.

We all remember the hoops we had to jump through to be admitted to college for our bachelor’s degree. My master’s degree program wasn’t much better because of the lack of communication about what was required. This was what caused me to stress about the time that would be involved in getting admitted to Carson-Newman’s Ed.S. program and all the paperwork I’d have to find or fill out. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the process at Carson-Newman University was incredibly smooth and stress-free. I could easily find all the information online, and when I needed clarification, my advisors were always able to answer my questions in a timely manner.

Helpful, Accessible Advisors

The advisors at Carson-Newman made the admission process a breeze. I was amazed at the high level of communication that I experienced from them. I got email updates from my advisor frequently that identified what I needed to add to my file and how I could submit the pieces online. The communication from my advisor was always friendly and professional. If I had a question, I received a timely answer the helped make the admission process less stressful.

My advisor even checked on me before classes began to make sure I had everything I needed. I was encouraged to reach out to them with any questions, and they were very encouraging throughout the entire process. They really seemed to understand the perspective of a full-time working teacher and tried to make every part of the admission process clear and concise.

Resources Available

Carson-Newman made the process easier by providing a variety of resources that helped me navigate the process. One of the most helpful for me was the online admissions page. The page listed everything that was required for admission along with links to the necessary forms. The page was incredibly easy to navigate and determine what I still needed to submit. By looking through this page, I could see what I already could submit and some things that would require a little more time.

Navigating Requirements and Locating Information

As a full-time teacher, I didn’t have time to pull together a large amount of paperwork or find information on many different links. In the program information meeting, I heard from representatives from Carson-Newman University who described the requirements to be admitted to the Ed.S. program. During the meeting, I filled out some of the necessary information to indicate my interest and began the process of admission. After the meeting, I took some paperwork that helped me finish the process from home.

One of the requirements for this post-degree program is to take the GRE exam. I was a bit nervous about this exam, as I had not taken an exam in quite a while. I was able to use the online page to determine the required scores for the GRE so I could guide my studying to match these scores. I also needed to submit a scholarly writing sample. I was able to communicate with my advisor about what would be accepted, and I could easily submit evidence of my writing from my past college experiences.

Financial Aid

One of the most important parts of the process for me was determining whether I could receive financial aid. As a teacher who was surviving on one salary, the financial aid was crucial to my attendance. I was able to apply for the FAFSA online and determine what would be covered by financial aid. The FAFSA just took a few minutes to fill out, and I received information about my qualifications from Carson-Newman University very quickly. I was able to accept the FAFSA online and apply it to my fees from the program. I could manage this in my student portal and check my status throughout my semesters in the program.

Throughout the admission process, the communication was very high-level from the advisors as to how the online information pages were set up. I couldn’t believe how easy it was to make this education dream a reality. Turns out, that afternoon meeting changed the course of my education and my career.
