Overview

This program is designed to prepare education personnel for administrative leadership positions as either school principals (PreK-8/5-12), special education administrators, or superintendents / assistant superintendents. The program plan has been designed to be completed in two and a half to three years including the practicum.

Learning Outcomes

  • To define, demonstrate, and build a school culture that makes use of best teaching practices and shared vision that results in a positive impact in PK-12 schools.
  • To define, demonstrate, and build a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment, using resources to implement appropriate curriculum, staffing, and scheduling.
  • To design and create effective partnerships with families, community organizations, and other stakeholders that support the mission of the school and district (which will lead to the success of all students) of continuous improvement for all students.
  • To define, develop, and sustain a school culture of reflective practice, high expectations, and continuous learning for all students and staff.

Program Length

  • Principal/Assistant Principal licensure track: This program plan is a total of 42 credits, which includes a 500 hour practicum in an approved Massachusetts public school setting.
  • Principal/Assistant Principal non-licensure track: This program plan is a total of 38 credits, and includes a field-based research course as the culminating experience.
  • Special Education Administration licensure track: This program plan is a total of 42 credit hours, which includes a 500 hour practicum in an approved Massachusetts public school setting.
  • Special Education Administration non-licensure track: This program plan is a total of 38 credits, and includes a field-based research course as the culminating experience.
  • Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent licensure track: This program plan is a total of 48 credits, which includes a 500 practicum in an approved Massachusetts public school setting.
  • Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent non-licensure track: This program plan is a total of 41 credits, which includes a field-based research course as the culminating experience.
  • Successful candidates are endorsed for licensure when they have successfully completed the MA-PALs assessment, are eligible to be recommended for licensure by the State, and become eligible for employment as a school administrator.

Note: The credit totals reflected above include the required SEI course. If Candidates already possess an SEI endorsement the credit total for the program would be reduced by 3 credits.

Admissions Requirements

  • The program requires a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.0. Students with a cumulative GPA below a 3.0 will be considered on a case by case basis.
  • Passage of the Communication and Literacy portion of the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) is required for all tracks.
  • Initial teaching license with three years of teaching experience or comparable time in an educational setting such as guidance counselor, therapist, etc.
