Overview

This program is designed for those who hold an appropriate baccalaureate degree and are seeking initial licensure to teach students with moderate disabilities, grades Pre-K through 8 or grades 5 through 12.

Learning Outcomes

  • Candidates will be able to design, administer and practice high quality instruction and assessments in the moderate disabilities special education academic classroom.
  • Candidates will be able to understand and promote the learning and growth of all moderate disabilities special education students through instructional practices that establish high expectations, safe classrooms, and cultural proficiency.
  • Candidates will be able to create and apply effective partnerships with families, community members and organizations in promoting learning and growth of all students.
  • Candidates will be able to demonstrate the capacity to reflect on and improve their own practice in order to improve teaching and learning in moderate disabilities special education classrooms.

Program Length

  • The licensure track for grade levels Pre K-8 program plan has been designed to be completed in two years for a total of 39 credits. This includes a 300 hour practicum (at least 75 hours in an inclusive setting) in an approved* Massachusetts school setting as well as an SEI course. Candidates seeking endorsement for Initial Teacher licensure must successfully complete the course sequence and submit passing scores on all** required MTEL Sections prior to entering their final practicum experience.
  • The non-licensure track for grade levels Pre K-8 program plan has been designed to be completed in two years for a total of 36 credits. This includes a field-based research course as the culminating experience.
  • The licensure track for grade levels 5-12 program plan has been designed to be completed in two years for a total of 39 credits. This includes a 300 hour practicum (at least 150 hours in an inclusive setting) in an approved* Massachusetts school setting as well as an SEI course. Candidates seeking endorsement for Initial Teacher licensure must successfully complete the course sequence and submit passing scores on all** required MTEL sections prior to entering their final practicum experience.
  • The non-licensure track for grade levels 5-12 program plan has been designed to be completed in two years for a total of 36 credits. This includes a field-based research course as the culminating experience.

All Initial Licensure programs require a Behavior/Classroom management class which is delivered fully online.

Admissions Requirements

  • The program requires a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.0. Students with a cumulative GPA below a 3.0 will be considered on a case by case basis.
  • Passage of the Communication and Literacy portion of the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) is required for the licensure track.

* Approved Massachusetts schools include public schools and charter schools. Collaborative, 766 schools, private schools, etc. considered after they have been submitted to the Program Director for review. If the school is a substantially separate school, the practicum may require two different settings to be in compliance with state regulations.

*** Total credit hours are as of 1-28-18 and reflect entry into the 2018-2019 academic year. Credit totals are subject to change in accordance with AIC institution and DESE requirements.
