Whether a teacher has a classroom of excited middle school teens or one with active 5-year-olds, student engagement is one of the biggest obstacles educators face. If students are to meet all of their learning targets and educational needs, engagement in the content must be constant and continuous. To better engage students, teachers are turning to technology in the classroom, like tablets, videos, and gamification, to better reach students, create more participation, and meet each student’s individual learning needs.

How to Use Tablets in the Classroom

Tablets are an easy way to bring technology to the classroom
and increase student engagement. Not only are most students these days somewhat familiar with tablets, but tablets have become a large part of a student’s free time and their social life. In the classroom, tablets can be used as a gratifying form of classroom management. Apps like Seesaw and ClassDojo help increase student engagement by providing real-time feedback. Students can also use apps such as these to broadcast their work with digital portfolios. Teachers may increase student engagement by using digital libraries, like Epic, that provide students access to 35,000 digital texts. Some teachers are using apps such as Storybird to help students boost their writing skills and easily share their work with their classmates. Using tablets as a form of technology in the classroom is an easy and sure why to excite and engage students.

Use Videos in the Classroom

Videos are another way to increase student engagement and bring technology into the classroom. Videos cater to the visual learner and bring subject matter to life for everyone. Tablets allow students to have a more interactive experience with the curriculum. Instead of reading about another country, why not take a virtual field trip somewhere? Why not research how fast a cheetah can run, and add a video clip of one in action? You can also watch step-by-step movies on math concepts like two-digit subtraction or multiplying fractions. Videos make learning come to life for students and leave a stronger impression with them

Another way to increase student engagement is by the use of gamification. Gamification is the application of typical elements of game playing in educational activities. Kahoot, Prodigy, and Socrative are all interactive games that excite students. Apps such as these allow teachers to fool their students into thinking they are playing a game while they earn virtual rewards and compete against the classmates sitting beside them. All the while, teachers are gathering data through quizzes, watching students comprehend digital content, and seeing them participate in review. Gamification is one of the easiest ways teachers can increase student engagement.

Whether a teacher has a classroom of middle school students or educates in an early childhood setting, student engagement is one of the biggest obstacles teachers face. In order to meet learning targets and educational goals, students need to be engaged in their learning. To help do this, teachers are turning to technology in the classroom via tablets, videos, and gamification. Technology in the classroom has quickly become one of the best ways to increase student engagement by providing technological opportunities that weren’t possible a decade before. It’s an exciting time to be a 21st-century learner.
