Experienced teachers with a desire to become content specialists in the area of reading and literacy. A minimum of 3 years experience teaching in a PreK-12 classroom is required to earn PreK-12 Reading Specialist License.

What You Learn:
Since its inception at Carson-Newman, the graduate program in education has been preparing educators for service in the school systems of East Tennessee. In line with the vision and mission of the University and of the unit, the graduate programs seek to prepare caring and professionally competent teachers and school leaders who feel called to bring about positive change and serve as mentors and role models. Candidates will: 1) use research findings from the professional literature, knowledge of best practice, and action research to reflect upon and make informed decisions about their own practice; 2) use technology as a tool to maximize student learning; manage professional responsibilities for oneself and others; and promote their own and others’ continued professional development for leadership roles; 3) effectively use varied assessment strategies to meet the needs of all children and teachers and to promote overall school improvement; 4) respectfully consider the needs of children and families from diverse cultural backgrounds to serve as change agents to ensure that all students learn; and 5) facilitate desirable relationships between home, school, and community in order to improve the overall quality of schools as places for learning for all students.
How You Learn:
Blended Format: When you enroll in a blended cohort, you will take the core courses for the degree in a face-to-face offering. These courses meet one night a week, from 4:45 to 8:45 p.m. You will take the remaining courses for your degree online. These courses will not require face-to- face class meetings; you will log in regularly to complete assignments and participate in online discussions and group activities. During the fall and spring terms, you will finish one course every 8 weeks. During the summer, you will complete up to four courses, and some 8-week courses. All courses in the summer are online. Following this schedule, you will complete the program in approximately 5 semesters.
Online Format: This is an online program; you will log in regularly to complete assignments and participate in online discussions and group activities. During the fall and spring terms, you will finish one 3 credit hour course every 8 weeks. During the summer, you will complete up to four courses, and some 8-week courses. Following this schedule, you will complete the program in approximately 5 semesters.
Upon completion of this program and passing of the Praxis Reading Specialist exam, students will have earned an M.Ed. degree and be recommended for the PreK-12 Reading Specialist License in the state of Tennessee. Note: You must have a minimum of three years of teaching experience prior to being recommended for licensure, and you must pass the Praxis Reading Specialist exam to receive the Master of Education.
